Attività fisica durante e dopo le terapie - FIL

Numerous studies show that physical exercise can provide several benefits, both in the short and long term, for people facing lymphoma. Engaging in physical activity during and after treatment—according to one’s clinical condition—can help improve quality of life and support recovery of normal physical and psychological well-being.

The intensity of exercise depends on the patient’s health status, the type of therapy, and the stage of the disease. Therefore, the type of physical activity should be defined together with the hematologist, and in specific cases, with the support of other specialists such as a physiotherapist.

Recommended activities

Activities during treatment:

  • Light walking (indoors or outdoors, to improve circulation)
  • Stretching exercises to maintain mobility
  • Gentle yoga or Pilates, useful for reducing stress and muscle tension
  • Breathing exercises to improve lung capacity

Activities after treatment:

  • Longer walks and Nordic walking to gradually reactivate the body
  • Swimming and water aerobics, ideal for muscle recovery without stressing the joints
  • Cycling or stationary bike to improve cardiovascular endurance
  • Light muscle-strengthening exercises (using resistance bands or light weights)
  • Tai Chi or Qi Gong, beneficial for balance and relaxation

It is extremely important to listen to your body and avoid overexertion, especially when feeling very fatigued. Even a few minutes of movement per day can make a difference. If recovery progresses well, it is possible over time to return to more intense sports, always after consulting with your hematologist.

Practical advice

  • Always consult your doctor before starting any physical activity
  • Listen to your body: if you feel excessive fatigue, stop and rest
  • Maintain proper hydration, especially after treatment
  • Avoid crowded environments (such as public pools or busy gyms) in case of immunosuppression
  • If you have undergone a bone marrow transplant, avoid excessive exertion in the first months
  • Include breathing and relaxation exercises to help manage stress
